Consultants Martin Griffiths has more than 30 years’ experience of working within the legal profession. He was a senior Clerk of a mid-size London chambers for over 15 years and was subsequently appointed as its first Director of Business Development. Through these roles, he gained a thorough understanding of lawyers, law firms and chambers. During his career he recruited many established practitioners and pupils into chambers, and provided career advice to countless members of the Bar who either remained in practice or who moved to a law firm or in-house. He has experience of all aspects of chambers administration and the recruitment of senior management staff. Martin was Chairman of the Institute of Barristers’ Clerks from 2002 to 2005, during which time he served on the Professional Standards Committee of the Bar Council. He was a member of working parties on Practice Management Standards, LSC Quality Mark and Complaints Handling, and was a member of the Organising Board of the Bar Conference. During the 1970’s he was Practice Director at Clifford Chance (Clifford-Turner) gaining experience on all aspects of law firm organisation and administration, but majored on lawyer recruitment including outward and inward secondments of UK and foreign lawyers. In the 1980’s he was a Partner in the Room Twelve Partnership, a recruitment consultancy specialising in the recruitment of solicitors and barristers for law firms in London and overseas. He represented the Hong Kong Government in the hiring of crown counsel and senior judicial appointments. During the 1990’s he was Director of Legal Personnel at Stephenson Harwood with responsibility for all HR aspects relating to the firm’s lawyers, but focusing on the recruitment of associates and partners for the firm’s London and overseas offices. Since 2000, he has engaged in structured lawyer search (headhunting) assignments on behalf of major UK and US firms, and has conducted law firm merger investigations and initiated merger discussions.
